What is Landmap?

The Landmap Service provides UK academia with a high quality spatial data download service which is enhanced and supported by a range of e-learning materials.

Datasets

Landmap hosts a combination of remotely-sensed imagery and spatial data information unique in UK academia. Landmap datasets are organised into 5 unique collections:

  • Optical & Thermal Collection: includes orthorectified Landsat 4/5; Landsat 7 and SPOT imagery; NIR Red-Edge; AVNIR-2; Mediterranean Landsat; Colour Infrared; TopSat; DMC; Modern and Historic Aerial Photography and Thermal imagery.
  • Radar Collection: includes ERS 1; ERS 2; ENVISAT ASAR and ALOS PALSAR.
  • Elevation Collection: includes Building Heights; Kinematic Global Positioning Survey (KGPS) for the UK; 75m Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data for the UK; 25m Digital Elevaiton Model (DEM) for the British Isles; 5m DTM and 2m DSM for England, Scotalnd and Wales and LiDAR data for many urban conurbations in the UK.
  • Feature Collection: includes Building Heights; Building Blocks and Building Classes data for the main conurbations in the UK.
  • UKMap Collection: includes a modern, highly detailed mapping database that contains 7 integrated data layers within a single product at 1:1,000 topographic scale covering the whole of London.

Learning Zone

Landmap provides a hub of e-learning resources through the Learning Zone:

Open Educational Resources: Provides courses on image processing, classification methods and the use of spatial data for a wide range of applications. There courses are authored by academics and the commerical sector and are provided free-of-charge to the global geospatial community.

Protected Educational Resources: Provides courses on aerial photography, 3D modelling, LiDAR, landuse mapping and UKMap for registered users of Landmap (UK academic community only).

ELOGeo: Provides a repository for the global geospatial community for materials covering the themes of geospatial open data, open software and open standards. Students, researchers and lecturers are all welcome to contribute content to this repository to facilitate sharing of GeoKnowledge in the wider community.

Spatial Science for Schools: A range of tutorials aimed at 9 - 18 years to encourage the use of remote sensing in Geography, Biology, Mathematics, Geomatics and Physics. Tutorials were authored as part of the FIS Project (University of Bonn) and are funded by the DLR German Aerospace Center and Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology Germany.

What is the current status of the service?

The Landmap Service was awarded a further 5 years funding by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) from 1st August 2007. This has enabled the Landmap Service to acquire further spatial data on behalf of the academic community from leading data providers e.g. Getmapping, RapidEye, Bluesky, Infoterra, SPOT Image, ESA, The GeoInformation Group and DMC Imaging. The service was also able to produce further learning materials to enable more students to utilise satellite imagery in their studies and research. We are keen to hear from any institutions who would be interested in producing learning materials for the following areas of interest:

  • Atmospheric correction
  • Use of OGC services in teaching and learning
  • Hyperspectral Imaging

Currently the Landmap Service is being reviewed by JISC.

How did the Landmap Service begin?

The JISC funded Landmap Project was a joint project between Mimas, the University College London Dept. of Geomatic Engineering and other project partners which began in 2001. (A full list of the project participants is under the Project Team link of this website.) The project produced orthorectified satellite image mosaics of Landsat, SPOT and ERS radar data and a high resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for the British Isles. This data is now available from the Landmap Service in formats that are readily accessible to users of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Image Processing and Desktop publishing software via the Landmap Service.

Since the completion of this project the Landmap Service has continued to develop and has been involved in the following projects:

  • 2006 - Present: ESA Cat 1 Project Monitoring the British Isles with ASAR and MERIS
  • 2007 - GEMS II Project (Grid Enabling Mimas Services using Athens)
  • 07/2008 - Launch of new Landmap website Content Management System (CMS) with Shibboleth implementation.
  • 2008/2009 - SARoNGS Project (Grid Enabling Landmap data using Shibboleth)
  • 2008/2009 - The GeoKnowledge Project - creation of the Learning Zone
  • 10/2009 - Release 1: Landmap Kaia - Based on APOLLO 9.3
  • 02/2010 - Landmap website: implementation of new templates; upgrade of CMS and launch of Learning Zone
  • 11/2010 - Release 2: Landmap Kaia - Based on APOLLO 2010
  • 2010/2011 - Metadata Enhancements Project - create ISO standard metadata to embed in Landmap Kaia and GoGeo
  • 2011 - Landmap Kaia - Based on APOLLO 2010
  • 2011 - Mimas Linked Data Project - create RDF of geospatial metadata
  • 2011 - ELOGeo Project - joint project with the University of Nottingham to create an online repository
  • 2011/2012 - Landmap Usability Project - assess the Landmap Learning Zone, Datasets and Kaia portal.
  • 04/2012 - Release 3: Landmap Kaia - Based on APOLLO 2011 new features include Bing Maps base map; integration of EDINA OS OpenStream service and gazateer.
  • 2012 - Open Educational Resources (OER) Rapid Innovation Project: Breaking Down Barriers
  • 08/2012 - Launch of Landmap - Spatial Science for Schools and upgrade of CMS

Mimas

Mimas is a JISC-supported national data centre providing the UK higher education, further education and the academic research community with networked access to key data and information resources to support teaching, learning and research across a wide range of disciplines. Mimas services are available free of charge to users at eligible institutions - although site subscriptions are required for a number of the data and information resources.
